OUTREACH IN THE COMMUNITY
We have many volunteers and particular focus on working with young people in the community. We have drama groups, music groups, counseling, sporting activities and business support workshops. We are looking to develop further video and IT training. Some of our already existing projects that have put smiles in so many faces and joy in so many hearts are:
Homeless Project - Winter Shelter Haringey
The Winter Shelter initiative started at FMC in December 2010 to serve the needs of homeless people and to help them in Haringey during the cold winter months.
Mercy Table
Mercy Table is a project in which we set up a table in our premises and make all kinds of food shoppings available once every month for the less privellege in the community to take whatever food shoppings they lack and cannot afford for financial reasons.
Summer Active Haringey Play Program
This is a sports summer programme for young people. This project began at FMC in the year 2011. It’s a rigorous, but exhilarating four-week program which offers a challenging opportunity to explore sports techniques, such as Athletics, Dodge-ball, Football, Drama and more...
Upcoming Community Projects
Haringey Street Pastors
We are in the process of linking up with the Haringey Street Pastor’s programme. This partnership is due to start soon. The Street Pastors are made up of members with a concern for society – in particular young people who feel they are excluded and marginalised. The Street Pastors are out most weekends at night to the dawn of morning making their presence visible so that young people out for pubs, club or parties can feel a sense of safety from a love and care group. We through this show the love of christ to a set of people that many in the society and even church circle have given up on. The Street Pastors are a people who are willing to engage people where they are, in terms of their thinking (i.e. their perspective of life) and location (i.e. where they hang out – be it on the streets, in the pubs and clubs or at parties etc). As the Street Pastor gets to know people in the community he/she will find out what their needs are and what can be done to help. A presence of Street Pastors earns credibility in the community, so that people know that the Church is there for them in a practical way. The role is not about preaching but one of listening, caring and helping – working in an unconditional way. Operation Connect
We are exploring Operation Connect, a task force operating under the umbrella of The Metropolitan Police that aims to positively engage and partner with organisations working with and mentoring young people across Haringey and the London Boroughs affected by gangs. This is even more important given the recent riots in London in the summer and impact on the community of Haringey in particular.
Mentoring for Youth Offenders
FMC is in negotiations with HMP coordinators to promote training for our members and young people to become involved in mentoring youth offenders within the prison system. We are hopeful that this initiative will be up and running from 2012.
Working with the Elderly
FMC has been in contact with 2 of the 3 care homes for the elderly that are run under Haringey Council at the moment to facilitate on-going voluntary work/help to these financially challenged homes. We have been able to agree the following:
- FMC will host an “Evening of Songs” for all residents beginning in January 2012. These evenings will be of a social and interactive nature where we will provide and serve refreshments to all the residents
- We have also agreed set times during the month when we will visit to provide practical assistance in the areas of personal grooming i.e. cutting of hair, nails etc and providing basic items for these elderly people.
- We have voiced the desire to also host dinner evenings once every quarter.
“Support for Children” Children’s Haringey Support
Children’s Haringey Support (CHS) is a new project. We were approached earlier this year and asked if we would help to facilitate a venue to this project. The aim is to support children that have been expelled or excluded from school for a short or long time, being that they may have broken a rule that the school they attended considers important. In some cases these children may have been permanently suspended (expelled) if the school decides that their behaviour has been very unacceptable. CHS will offer a place where these children can come to further their educational needs, in a more one-to-one environment. Giving them another opportunity to complete their school years, through alternative education meeting their needs and they will be supported to attend further education or work, and this could be through apprenticeships. We are very excited about this as it helps us to ensure no one is left behind in our society. Join with us and make a difference in someones life today by making a donation in cash and in kind for us to continue to bring relief to the needy in our society.
